Food for Fuel: London

The food is notoriously bad in London, but I rather enjoyed my meals. Our hostel had a healthier breakfast than most with actual whole grain cereal, which I had not eaten since leaving the U.S. I find that it’s best to start the day with a healthy breakfast if you’re going to spend the rest of it eating Cadbury’s.

I know there’s an awesome picture of my hugging a Cadbury’s vending machine (!) somewhere. I cannot find it, but I will and then I shall prove to you that this miracle does indeed exist.

On with the show: one of my first meals in London was classic fish and chips, served in (fake) newspaper. It was top quality and I enjoyed every greasy bite. Worth feeling a bit off the rest of the afternoon. It was served with mushy peas and tartar sauce. I covered it with malt vinegar. Fish and chips is so yummy that my travelmates continued to order it at every restaurant in London. Their blogs would be so boring.

One night we happened to stumble upon an extremely cute pub. I had our picture taken inside because it was so cute. You can’t see much of the pub, but you can see MSB, Brian, Dan, and me.

The cute pub had a large list of sausages served in different ways. I got one of their summer specials: a tomato-flavored sausage served over salad. (Awww…look at Jess trying to be healthy in a sausage house.) It was really good!

Excitingly, my parents joined us for one of our best meals in London. They were traveling through England and, like good little Episcopalians, joined us for church at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Then, like good little Episcopalians, we drank lots of beer over a long lunch.

Again with the headscarf…our hostel had no outlets for hair dryers or straighteners. Anyway, I got a Ploughman’s Salad (I think that’s what it was called), which is a mixed plate of ham, bread, salad, coleslaw, pickle relish, and a nice chunk of cheese. I loved all the variety on this plate.

One night we needed a quick meal before a comedy show, so we tried out Pizza Express, a chain pizza joint in the UK. MSB and I were full of beer not very hungry, so we split the healthiest pizza I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant. It was covered with vegetables and had a hole in the middle (like a donut!) that was filled with salad.

I really wanted Indian food on the last night, but we got lost looking for a restaurant that I read about in a guidebook and gave up. :(

I will find that Cadbury’s vending machine picture!
