Daily Run: Late Summer Rain

Time of Day: 6:45 AM

Weather: 72*, raining

Duration:  1 hour 5 minutes 55 seconds

Distance: 8 miles

Average Pace: 8:14/mile

Notes: I woke up to the sound of rain, which I do not like to hear when I’m about to go running. I don’t mind a little rain during the hot summer months, but when it rains here it often storms. Also, I do not trust Garmin’s ability to keep out water, not if the bezel goes crazy when a little sweat gets in it.

But there was no storm, so of course I went out in the rain instead of driving to a treadmill. Rain is the lesser of the two evils.

I was rewarded for my rain run. It was beautiful outside–cooler and just a very light rain that never progressed into a storm. It was refreshing and my legs felt good. I didn’t let myself get fast this time and made sure to keep the pace slower than 8 minute miles.

The weather felt great and my legs felt decent, but I ran out of energy. I have not been sleeping well and I think it’s catching up to me. Also, I was hungry when I woke up this morning and decided to ignore it until I got home. Perhaps I didn’t eat enough yesterday.

Either way, I had to concentrate on the beautiful morning just to get myself home. The rain lightened to a mist and the sun was peaking out behind the clouds. I wasn’t hot or uncomfortably wet. There were hardly any other runners outside, which made me sad for them. Don’t be afraid of the rain!

  • Running in a light rain is good. Running in a storm can sometimes be hell; I hate being soaked.

  • that rainy run sounds lovely :)

Treadmill > rain for me! I ran in the rain once and will not do it again. The downpour made my contact almost fall out of my eyeball and I had to wink the entire time running. And I hate squishy shoes. It was another treadmill Friday for me today!

  • summer rain is so amazing! but i hate starting out in rain even though i can handle it starting once i’m going

  • Totally agree – rain is the lessor of two evils. I will never understand those that resort to the treadmill so quickly. I just saw your cookie recipie and I have an overripe banana that might find it’s way into a batch today:)

I also love running in the rain. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to run in a light rain – it is very refreshing, especially during summer. However, I wouldn’t want to run in a storm!

  • i haven’t ran in the ran in so long b/c there always seems to be thunder/lightning with it! i’m not brave enough to take my chances with that. it does usually feel pretty good and keeps you a little cooler, though you still finish the run with soaking wet clothes.
