Strength-Training: Still Trying to Like Yoga

Time of Day: 8:40 AM

Weather: Climate-controlled

Duration: About 65 minutes

Yoga class: 60 minutes

Notes: I thought I would sleep like a rock last night after running 20 miles that morning, but I didn’t. I slept very badly, actually, and definitely feel it today. I did let myself sleep in an hour later than on running days, so that helped a little.

My upper hamstring and glute were so tight after work last night that I thought I strained a muscle, but I felt a lot better after rolling out and much better after lifting weights and yoga today. I still don’t know if I like yoga, but it was hard on my tired arms after lifting weights. I also love that it made my hamstring feel better, but it actually hurt Cranky a little.

I did the Longer Session under the Jess Lifts tab. I’ve added some barbell exercises to the end. Using a 20 lb. barbell, I do the following:

  • Put it over my shoulders and bend side to side slowly, squeezing the obliques.
  • Do a bent over row by holding it the barbell in front of my legs, bending over with a straight back, and pulling the barbell up by bending my elbows.
  • Put barbell over shoulders, twist slowly to look over one shoulder, twist to front, repeat on other side.
  • Repeat bent over row.

The above works your back and core.

On an unrelated note, MSB and I watched Run Fatboy Run last night. Funny, highly improbable running movie. I recommend.

  • Have you tried yogadownload.com? All of their 20 minute podcasts are free, and if you have done some classes you are probably safe to do it at home.

I like it because I find yoga a struggle unless I am really in the mood, but I can do anything for 20 minutes. Plus it always makes me feel better afterwards.
