Daily Run: Oh Marathon Pace, Where Are You?

Time of Day: 6:40 AM

Weather: 73* with 84% humidity, sunny

Duration:  1 hours 41 minutes 23 seconds

Distance: 13 miles

Average Pace: 7:48/mile

Notes: Today’s workout was my second attempt at 2 x 3 miles at marathon goal pace. I’m glad I woke up before my alarm, because this workout took me forever.

I have to run at least 2.25 miles to a place where I can do speedwork without worrying about intersections. That’s fine, because I needed a long warm-up today anyway. Perhaps yoga did not stretch me out enough. Jury is still out.

Once I was there, it was time to start my 3 mile repeats. Yikes. My goal pace was 7:15/mile.

First Set
Mile 1: 7:11. Hooray!
Mile 2: 7:00. A little too fast, but I’m glad I can slow down.
Mile 3: 6:48. Ummm…except I didn’t slow down.

I did a recovery jog of 1 mile, then it was time to start the second set of 3 miles. My legs felt heavy and I really didn’t want to speed up again. It was difficult to get back into the groove during that first mile.

Second Set
Mile 1: 7:03. Complete surprise because I thought I was going much slower.
Mile 2: 7:09. Good. Still hanging in there.
Mile 3: 7:04. Meh, at least it wasn’t too slow.

I wasn’t as far off my marathon goal pace as usual, with the exception of Mile 3 during the first set. I suspect my pace will be a little slower than 7:15 during the race though, so I really want to get used to running a comfortable pace and not one that makes me super tired like today.

So yeah…super tired after the second set, and now I’m about 3.75 miles from home. It was a long cooldown, but the sun was up and the sky looked bright and pretty after a week of rain and clouds. I think it kept my spirits up. 13 miles is a lot when you aren’t prepared for a long run day and I was dragging on the way home.

  • I’ll take some of your speed, if you’d like :)

  • you can send that extra speed my way. i’d definitely take it! and 13 miles is crazy (but awesome!) for a speed session :)

p.s. if you’re going faster than MP does that mean that you’re running too fast for the workout or that you’re projected MP is too slow? just curious as to what you think…

  • Yup, look everyone wants your speed!

When you are pacing yourself, how do you do it? Do you watch your garmin while running or merely check it at the end of every mile?

  • Jess

Karyn: I’m running too fast. No way could I hold that pace for 26.2.

Katerina: I just check at the end of the mile.

  • LOVING your Bittman challenge! It has been so fun to follow! Also, I am going to Austin tomorrowww! And before remembering your recent move, I was thinking LONG RUN/BLOGGER MEET UPPPP but then I 1. remembered your run 2. read your last couple of blogs and realized YOU ARE CRAZY FAST. I can’t even fathom 10 miles at your pace, much less 17! Alas, I shall run alone and only wish that one day I will achieve negative splits as impressive as yours :] ha!

  • way to go! super fast for an extra long time… is this the first time you’ve done 3 mile repeats? you rocked it! i was feelin so bad ass when i did my 2-mile repeats:) something about going that extra mile, so to speak, lol.

  • what a terrible issue to have ;) i know though, you want to make sure you can sustain the proper pace for the full distance. i’m sure you’ll find it soon! maybe check your watch about half-way in each mile? at least until you get closer to holding your goal pace “naturally”?

  • Echoing Lindsay, I wish I could just have an oops and find that I’ve run a mile repeat in 6:48. I mean, the thought of that is hysterical! :)
