Daily Run: Too Sore for Speed

Time of Day: 6:30 AM

Weather: 47*, windy

Duration: 1 hour 31 minutes 55 seconds

Distance: 11 miles

Average Pace: 8:21/mile

Notes: Yesterday I didn’t think Boot Camp was “that” hard, although it was a decent workout.  I did my Longer Session at work between clients and it felt good to get in two decent strength sessions of different kinds.  That is, it felt good until this morning.

I got up way before my alarm and my inner thighs were yelling all sorts of obscenities about how sore they are and how they were supposed to feel great after a “rest” day and blah blah blah.  According to my schedule, I was supposed to do a progression run this morning and hoped they would shut up after a few warm-up miles.

I did a 2.5 mile warm-up and started to pick up the pace.  My legs said “no.”  I guess that’s what I get for making them work on their off day.  It was too uncomfortable to run fast and I was afraid of straining a muscle if I forced it, so I switched my progression run out with Friday’s medium-long run and did that instead…slowly.

I’m kind of annoyed that I had to switch the schedule around, but that’s what happens sometimes and I might have to do it because of early morning work obligations later in the week too.  Such is life.

Also, it’s weird to get back to my apartment and not be sweaty after 11 miles.  I’m sure the rest of you haven’t sweat since September, but this is new for me.

  • isnt it nice not to be sweaty :) love this time of year!

  • Amy

I’m constantly sweaty so I can’t relate there! I hate hate hate switching my training schedule around but it happens and is probably no big deal. I should start strength training at some point…

  • nice 11. i wouldn’t worry about switching up the plan. clearly running speed wouldn’t have been productive to you and i don’t think anyone follows a plan 100%

  • nice!!! glad it made you sore, mwahahaha :) i think swapping is totally allowed. i doubt you are slacking in any way shape or form. and it’s just starting to get cold here. upper 30s-40s now, but that is just recently. time to switch modes..

  • Very nice. You are wise not to push obviously tired muscles. Like result would have been a pace disappointing to you and/or tweaking something. Live to fight another day.

  • Very nice run! Sometimes I wonder if I’m working on those non-sweaty runs…but they are nice!

  • i often swap out days, especially in my last training plan. it was usually due to laziness though, not soreness from new-exercises… whoops.

you definitely get your share of extended hot weather – it was nice when the temp broke earlier in the fall but now in the 20′s/30′s… not so desirable. it’s always weird to me to not-sweat in the winter, i feel like i didn’t work as hard!
